OC Raw Dog Food Recalled for Possible Salmonella

OC Raw Dog of California is recalling 640 pounds of their raw dog food because it may be contaminated with Salmonella bacteria. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this recalled product.

OC Raw Dog Frozen Food Salmonella RecallThe recalled product is Chicken, Fish & Produce Raw Frozen Canine Formulations that was packaged into 6.5 pound Doggie Dozen Patties, 4 pound Doggie Sliders, and 3 pound Meaty Rox. The lot number is 1819, and the use by date is 05/05/16. Distribution is limited to customers in Colorado, Vermont, and Pennsylvania, and sold to consumers through independent pet specialty retailers. Routine testing by the Colorado Department of Food and Agriculture discovered the bacteria in the Meaty Rox product. Another sample was previously tested by the California Department of Agriculture and it was negative for Salmonella.

The company is asking that if you the product, go to their website and submit a picture of it for verification. Return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund, or throw it away in a sealed or double bagged container so other animals can’t eat it.

The symptoms of a Salmonella infection in a dog include decreased appetite, fever, and abdominal pain. Pets may be lethargic and develop diarrhea that may be bloody, fever,and vomiting. Some pets can become carriers of Salmonella and not show any symptoms, which poses a risk to humans and other animals. If your pet shows any of these symptoms, see your veterinarian.

People can become sick by handling this product and not washing their hands thoroughly with soap and water. The bacteria can also get on pet’s fur through feces. Petting the animal can then infect the person if they eat or put their hands in their mouths. Children are especially susceptible to contracting Salmonella from pets. Symptoms of a Salmonella infection in people include nausea, vomiting, fever, chills, diarrhea that may be bloody, abdominal cramps, and muscle aches.
