P. East Trading Recalls Split Herring Because it is Uneviscerated

P. East Trading Corporation in the Bronx, New York, is recalling Salted Smoked Split Herring because it was uneviscerated. The sale of this type of fish is prohibited because Clostridium botulinum spores are more likely to be found in the viscera than any other portion of the fish. Uneviscerated fish have been linked to botulism outbreaks. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with the consumption of the recalled products.

Recall SignThe recalled Salted Smoked Split Herring was sold in New York and New Jersey. It is a product is imported from Canada. The product was packaged in 18 pound wooden boxes with a May 19, 2015 date. The product was repackaged by stores for retail sale.

If you are not sure whether you purchased this product or not, contact the place where you bought it and ask. If you did buy this product, do not eat it. Discard or return to the store where you bought it for a full refund.

The symptoms of botulism food poisoning include blurred or double vision, general weakness, poor reflexes, difficulty in swallowing, and respiratory paralysis. If you have experienced these symptoms, see a doctor immediately.
