Pacific Oyster Company Recalls Tuna and Salmon for Possible Botulism

Pacific Oyster Company, doing business as The Fish Peddler of Bay City, Oregon is recalling canned tuna, salmon, and smoked salmon because it may be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum bacteria. That bacteria produces a toxin that can cause life-threatening illness. This is another secondary recall of products canned by Skipanon Brand Seafoods. Garibaldi Cannery, Ecola Seafoods, and Skipanon Brand Seafoods are also recalling products for possible botulism toxin. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with the consumption of these products.

The Pacific Oyster Company recall is for products that were distributed only at the Fish Peddler restaurant and retail store in Bay City, Oregon. The products were sold under the “Pacific Seafood” label. They are 6 ounce cans of “Premium Solid White Albacore Tuna”, 6.5 ounce cans of “Pacific Salmon” and 6.5 ounce cans of “Smoked Pacific Salmon.” All of the products have the code starting with “OC” under the can.

Lack of documentation and possible under-processing at Skipanon Brand Seafoods may have created conditions for the growth of this bacteria in the cans. The symptoms of Botulism poisoning include weakness, dizziness, double vision, trouble swallowing, difficulty speaking, difficulty breathing, and weakness of muscles. If you experience these symptoms, see a doctor immediately.

If you purchased any of these products, do not eat them. Discard in a sealed or double bagged container or return to the place of purchase for a refund.
