melissa's-salmonella-pine-nutswegmans-salmonella-pine-nutsTwo brands of pine nuts, Wegmans and Melissa’s, are being recalled for Salmonella. Although there were no reports of illness at the time of the recall, consumers who have purchased these products should not eat them as Salmonella can cause serious illness.

The recalled is being issued by World Variety Produce, Inc. of Los Angeles. The company has ceased production and distribution during the investigation.

The Melissa’s brand recalled nuts were sold in 2 oz plastic bags with the UPC 0-45255-14351-5,  the use by date 09.14.2016 and the batch code 15CNP10. The Wegmans brand nuts were sold in 3 oz plastic tubs with the UPC 0-77890-24823-2, and best if used by dates 041016 or 041716.

The recalled products were sold in the following states: Arizona, Arkansas, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and Washington.

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children,  seniors and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of an infection include fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In some cases, the infection can travel to the bloodstream producing more severe, life-threatening illnesses.

The recall was a result of a routine random sampling program by the FDA which revealed that the finished products contained the bacteria.
