72 in Estill County KY Sick, 35 with Salmonella, 8 Hospitalized

Estill County Kentucky Salmonella LawsuitA food poisoning outbreak in Estill County, Kentucky includes at least 72 people, and 35 of them have confirmed cases of Salmonella infection, according to local new reports. A young boy is among the eight people who have been hospitalized.

County and state health officials are working to determine the cause of the outbreak. They have not named the restaurant associated with the outbreak but said it voluntarily closed to aid the outbreak investigation.

The Eagles Roost sports bar and restaurant, in Irvine, has closed temporarily posting a handwritten sign on its door reading “Closed Until Further Notice Thank You!!”  According to a report on WKYT,  a recent inspection of the Eagles Roost noted six violations including dishwasher water not being hot enough and bags of chicken breast and pulled pork being thawed at room temperature.

After the illnesses were reported, officials performed another inspection and found only one violation – for glasses at the bar being stored upside down, Eagles Roost owner Don Wiseman told Lex18.com. Wiseman says he is convinced his restaurant is safe and plans to reopen soon.

Symptoms of a Salmonella infection including nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea that can be bloody usually appear six to seventy-two hours after infection and last up to a week. Those at highest risk to contract a Salmonella infection and develop severe complications from it include young children, seniors, those with compromised immune systems, and those who suffer from chronic illness.
