FDA Investigates Peanut Residue in Some Flour Products

The FDA is investigating low levels of peanut residue in some flour and flour products originating from Grain Craft. The flour has been recalled, but secondary recalls have been announced. Some allergic reactions have been reported. People who do not have peanut allergies do not need to avoid these recalled products.

Peanut allergies are so serious because a very tiny amount of the nut or nut residue can cause anaphylactic shock and death. The secondary recalls of products made with this flour include Cinnabon Stix, Safeway 8″ Single Layer Red Velvet Cake, ACME 12″ Decorated Chocolate Chip Cookie, Jewel 12″ Decorated Chocolate Chip Chunk Cookie, Chick-fil-A Chocolate Chunk Cookies, and Hostess Snack Cake and Donut products.

The symptoms of an allergic reaction to peanut can include shortness of breath; swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat;  hives; flushed skin or rash; tingling or itchy sensation in the mouth; and face, tongue, or lip swelling. More serious symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, coughing, wheezing, dizziness, lightheadedness, swelling of the throat or vocal cords, and difficulty breathing.
