Frozen Chicken Patties for Dogs Recalled for Salmonella

Carnivore Meat Company is recalling a single lot of Vital Essentials Frozen Chicken Patties Entree for Dogs because one of the samples collected and tested by the FDA was positive for Salmonella. No reports of illness of dogs or people have been received to date.

The UPC number is 33211 00807, Lot number 11475, and best by date of 20161108 (11/08/16). The “Best By” date code and lot numbers are located on the back of the package. These product was distributed in California, Florida, Georgia, Rhode Island, Texas, and Washington state.

Dogs can contract Salmonella food poisoning. They may be lethargic, or vomit, have diarrhea, weight loss, and a fever. Dogs can be carriers of Salmonella bacteria without showing any symptoms. People are also at risk from these products, since they can contract the illness by petting their dog and then putting their hands in their mouths or eating food without washing first. If your dog is ill and has eaten this product, take her to your veterinarian.

Human symptoms of Salmonella food poisoning include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea that may be bloody, abdominal cramps, fever, chills, headache, and muscle pains. Symptoms usually begin six to seventy-two hours after exposure to the bacteria. If you have this product in your home and have experienced these symptoms, see your doctor.

If you purchased this product, do not feed it to your pet. Throw it away in a double bagged or sealed container or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Then wash your hands carefully with soap and water after handling the food.
