Georgia Bi-Lo Store Recalls Cantaloupe for Listeria

bi-lo-cantaloupe-listeriaA Bi-Lo store in Glennville, Georgia is recalling cantaloupe products they may be contaminated with Listeria. Other Bi-Lo stores are not affected by the recall.

At the time of the recall, no illnesses had been reported. However, consumers who have purchased products containing cantaloupe such as fruit trays and fruit bowls should not eat them as Listeria can cause serious illness and death. And symptoms of a Listeria infection, which include fever, muscle aches, headache preceded by gastrointestinal symptoms, can take as long as 70 days to develop.

Those most at risk for serious infections are young children, seniors, those with weakened immune systems and pregnant women, among whom Listeria can cause miscarriages, stillbirths and infections in newborns.

The store that sold the recalled cantaloupe is located at  312 S. Veterans Blvd.
Glennville, Georgia.  The recalled products have a “sell by” date of 2/24/16 and include: Cantaloupe Chunks (sizes medium and large) in plastic bowl with lid; Cantaloupe Halves in styrofoam trays wrapped in clear plastic; Cantaloupe Slices in styrofoam trays wrapped in clear plastic; Mixed Melon Chunks (sizes medium and large) in plastic bowl with lid; Mixed Fruit Bowl (sizes medium and large) in plastic bowl with lid and Fruit Tray Cantaloupe in plastic tray with lid.

The problem was discovered by the Georgia Department of Agriculture, which tested a sample from a medium-sized container of cantaloupe chunks
