Gravlax Recalled in Canada for Listeria Monocytogenes

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is announcing that the public should not consume Fjord Laks Gravlax (raw marinated cured salmon) because it may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria. There have been no reported illnesses linked to the consumption of this product, but listeriosis, the illness caused by this bacteria, can take up to 70 days to appear.

Fjord Laks Gravlax RecallThe recalled product is Fjord Laks Gravlax – Marinated Salmon (Dill sauce included) in 165 gram packages. The UPC number on the product is variable. All Best Before dates, up to and including April 20, 2016 are included in this recall. The product was sold in Quebec at the retail level.

If you purchased this product, do not eat it. Throw it away  in a sealed or double bagged package so other people and animals can’t eat it, or return it to the place of purchase for a refund. Then clean out your refrigerator or wherever the product was stored with a mild bleach solution of one tablespoon liquid chlorine bleach to one gallon of warm water. Listeria bacteria can grow at refrigerator temperatures and can contaminate other foods.

If you ate this recalled product, watch yourself for the symptoms of listeriosis for the next 70 days. Those symptoms include flu-like fever, muscle aches, stiff neck, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of balance, headache, and confusion. Pregnant women may only have a mild flu-like illness, but listeriosis can cause premature labor, miscarriage, stillbirth, and infection in the newborn baby. If you do experience these symptoms, see your doctor.
