Hy-Vee is recalling frozen Vegetable Fried Ride and Chicken Fried Rice for possible Listeria contamination. No illnesses have been reported in connection with the consumption of these products, but listeriosis can take weeks or months to appear.

HyVee Chicken Fried Rice Listeria RecallThe recalled products are frozen Hy-Vee Vegetable Fried Rice in 1 pound bags with UPC number 000007545012530 and a “use by” date of November 5, 2017 or earlier. The frozen Hy-Vee Chicken Fried Rice product being recalled was sold in 20 ounce bags with the UPC number 0075450125290 and a “use by” date of November 5, 2017 or earlier. They were sold at Hy-Vee stores in Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wisconsin between July 24, 2014, and May 12, 2016.

If you purchased either of these products, do not eat them even if you plan to cook them first. Throw them away or return them to the store where you bought them for a full refund. Then clean out your refrigerator and/or freezer with a mild bleach solution to kill any remaining bacteria.

If you ate either of these products, watch yourself for the symptoms of listeriosis for the next 70 days, but be aware that most people, if they do get sick, get ill within three or four weeks after exposure. The symptoms include severe headache, high fever, neck stiffness, muscle aches, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and other flu-like symptoms. Pregnant women need to be especially cautious about this illness, since listeriosis can cause miscarriage and stillbirth. If you do feel sick, see your doctor.
