Hy-Vee, Schnucks Recall Maytag Blue Cheese for Listeria

Blue Cheese Listeria RecallListeria in Maytag Blue Cheese has prompted a recall from Hy-Vee and Schnucks. At the time of the recall,  no illnesses were reported in connection with the cheese, but consumers who have purchased it should not eat it as Listeria can cause serious illness and death. And symptoms of an infection can take as long as 70 days to develop.

Symptoms of an infection include headache, stiff neck, muscle aches often preceded by gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Those most at risk are pregnant women, children, seniors and those with weakened immune systems. Among pregnant women, Listeria can cause miscarriages and stillbirths.

At Schnucks, the recall includes Maytag Blue Cheese, 4 oz. wedges, UPC 0085408900104 and Maytag Blue Cheese, sold in various sizes packaged in clear plastic wrap with Maytag Blue Cheese Dairy Farmson the  label and the UPC 0021806200000. The recalled cheese was sold between February 4  and February 29, 2016 at Schnucks stores in Missouri, Illinois, and one store in Iowa. At Hy-Vee stores, the recalled cheese was sold in whole wheels and cuts, and re-packaged in foil or clear plastic wrap with scale labels in various weights and as crumbles in plastic containers. All of the recalled products were labeled as “Maytag Blue Raw Milk,” “Maytag Blue” or “Maytag Iowa Blue Cheese”  with PLU numbers beginning with 854089001 and with “use by” dates between Jan. 20, 2016 and May 3, 2016. The recalled products were sold at all 240 Hy-Vee stores in Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin, between Nov. 20, 2015 and March 2, 2016.
