Iowa Salmonella Linked to Big G’s Potato Salad

SalmonellaPotato salad from a Big G Food Store in Marengo, Iowa is the source of a Salmonella outbreak, according to state health officials. Consumers who have purchased Big G’s “Zesty Potato Salad” and “Traditional Potato Salad”recently should not eat it.

The Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals (DIA) and the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) issued a consumer advisory for potato salads made and sold at the Marengo store. Initial results of tests performed by the State Hygienic Laboratory at the University of Iowa indicate the products are contaminated by Salmonella. The Big G Food Store removed the salads from the store on Friday.

Symptoms os a Salmonella infection, which usually appear between six and 72 hours after exposure, include nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea that can be bloody. These symptoms can last about a week.

Anyone who ate the recalled salads and develops these symptoms should see a doctor. Avoiding dehydration is key. Those sickened should drink plenty of fluids.
