Jafflz Recalled in Utah for Possible Botulism Risk

Jafflz-recallDu Monde Gourmet of Park City, UT  is recalling approximately 235 pounds of ready-to-eat Jafflz pocket sandwich products because they may contain Clostridium perfringens, Bacillus cereus, and/or Clostridium botulinum. These bacteria are associated with temperature abuse.

At the time of the recall there had been no confirmed reports of illness but consumers who have purchased these products should not eat them as they can cause serious illness.

The recalled products were shipped to retail locations in Utah and have the code “EST. 48106” inside the USDA mark of inspection. They include: 24-count cases containing 4-6 pieces of “Jafflz Retro Pocket Sandwiches Pasghetti Jaffles with Italian Meat Sauce;” 24-count cases “Jafflz retro pocket Sandwiches Classic Jaffles with Bacon, Egg and Cheese; ” 24-count cases containing 4-6 pieces of “Jafflz Retro Pocket Sandwiches Frittatta Jaffle With Meditterannean Italian Sausage Scramle;” and 24-count cases containing 4-6 pieces of “Jafflz Retro Pocket Sandwiches BBQ Joe Jaffle with Beefy Sloppy Joe Cheese.”

The company discovered the problem during an internal records review. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA- FSIS), toxins emitted by Clostridium perfringens cause intense abdominal cramps and diarrhea which begin eight to 22 hours after consumption of contaminated foods.  The illness is usually resolves within 24 hours but less severe symptoms may persist up to two weeks.

Toxins emitted by Bacillus cereus bacteria cause nausea and vomiting within 30 minutes to six hours after consumption of contaminated foods.

And Clostridium botulinum is the bacteria that causes botulism which can be fatal. Symptoms usually appear between 18 and 36 hours of exposure but can sometimes appear in as few as six hours or as many as 10 days after consumption. They include double vision, blurred vision, drooping eyelids, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, dry mouth, and muscle weakness. Anyone with these symptoms should see a doctor immediately.

Consumers who have purchased these products throw them away or return them to the place of purchase.
