Listeria Recall for Trader Joe’s Broccoli Slaw & Kale Salad

Trader Joe’s Broccoli Slaw & Kale Salad with white meat chicken is being recalled for Listeria monocytogenes. Consumers who have purchased this product should not eat it as Listeria can cause serious illness and death.

Ghiringhelli Specialty Foods,  of a Vallejo, Calif., issued a recall for the product after a supplier of sunflower seeds notified them that the seeds, which are an ingredient in the salad, may be contaminated with Listeria.

Ghiringhelli is recalling approximately 33,610 pounds of two products. One labeled Broccoli Slaw & Kale Salad with White Chicken Meat, was produced April 26 through May 1, 2016, and has “USE BY” dates of 05/02 through 05/07. The other, labeled “Trader Joe’s Broccoli Slaw & Kale Salad with White Chicken Meat; Sunflower Seeds, Cranberries and a sweet & Spicy Vinaigrette” was sold in 9.3-OZ. clear plastic containers. Both have establishment number “P-17156” inside the USDA mark of inspection.

The recalled items were shopped to Trader Joe’s distributors in Arizona, California, Nevada, and Utah. At the time of the recall, there had been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions or illnesses, and the recalled products have been removed from the market, according to the company.

Eating food contaminated with Listeria can cause listeriosis, a serious infection that can be fatal. Those at highest risk of infection are seniors, people with weakened immune systems, pregnant women and their newborns. Among pregnant women, Listeria can cause miscarriage, stillbirth, premature birth and infection of newborn.

Listeriosis symptoms include diarrhea, abdominal pain, or vomiting, followed by  fever, stiff neck, muscle aches, headache, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions.

Consumers who have purchased these products should not consume them. They can be returned to the place of purchase for a refund.  Consumers who have eaten the salad should monitor themselves for symptoms over the next 70 days and see a doctor if they develop.
