Lorigo Beef Patties E. coli Recall in Buffalo, NY

beef-patty-e.coli-recallMeating Place of Buffalo, NY has issued a recall for Lorigo brand frozen beef patties because they may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. About 325 pounds of ground beef product distributed in the Buffalo, NY area are included in the recall.

At the time of the recall, no illnesses had been reported in connection with the recalled product. However, consumers who have purchased this product should not eat it as E. coli can cause serious illness and death.

Symptoms of an E. coli O157 infection include stomach cramps and diarrhea that is sometimes bloody. These symptoms are sometimes accompanied by a low-grade fever. Onset of illness usually occurs two to five days after exposure to contaminated food and lasts a week to 10 days.

A small number of people with E. coli infections, particularly small children, are at risk for a complication called hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) which causes seizure, stroke, coma and death. Symptoms include easy bruising, pallor, and decreased urine output. Anyone with these symptoms should seek emergency medical care immediately.

The recalled product was sold in 5-lb. boxes marked “LORIGO BRAND BEEF PATTIES KEEP FROZEN THE MEATING PLACE INC.”  The packages were marked with the code 120106 and the establishment number “Est. 8631” was stamped inside the USDA mark of inspection.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Food Safety and Inspection Service discovered the problem during a routine in-plant review of testing results. The agency urges consumers in the Buffalo area to check their freezers.
