Maytag Dairy Farms Expands Raw Milk Blue Cheese Recall for Listeria

Maytag Dairy Farms in Newton, Iowa is expanding their recall of Maytag Raw Milk Blue Cheese for possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. They recalled one lot number this past weekend. To date no illnesses have been reported in connection with the consumption of these products, but listeriosis, the illness caused by this bacteria, can take up to 70 days to appear.

Maytag Raw Milk Blue Cheese Listeria RecallThe recalled cheeses are from Lot 150482. The cheeses recalled on February 14, 2016 are from Lot 150481. This new lot includes about 1,100 pounds of cheese. Some was distributed to retail locations before the initial recall. The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship’s Dairy Products Control Bureau discovered the possible contamination as part of the follow up testing of cheese products from that facility.

If you purchased any Maytag Raw Milk Blue Cheese with lot numbers 150481 or 150482 from Maytag Dairy Farms, do not eat it. Throw it away in a sealed container or return it to the place of purchase for a refund. Then clean out your refrigerator with a mild bleach solution made of one tablespoon liquid chlorine bleach to one gallon of water. Listeria monocytogenes bacteria can grow at refrigerator temperatures and the cheese may have contaminated the appliance. Then wash your hands well with soap and water.

If you ate any of the recalled cheeses, watch yourself for the symptoms of Listeria monocytogenes food poisoning for the next 70 days. Those symptoms include high fever, stiff neck, flu-like symptoms, muscle aches, nausea, and diarrhea. The very young, elderly, and those with chronic illnesses and compromised immune systems are more likely to develop this infection. Pregnant woman may only be mildly ill, but this infection can cause miscarriage, stillbirth, premature labor, and infection in the newborn baby. If you do get sick, see your doctor and tell him you ate this recalled product.
