McDonald’s Recalls Step-iT Activity Wristbands for Burn Hazard

The Consumer Product Safety Commission is recalling children’s activity wristbands because they can cause skin irritation or burns. McDonald’s has received more than 70 reports of incidents of children being harmed, including seven reports of blisters, after they wore the wristbands. The bands were given away as a toy in meals.

About 29 million units were given away in the U.S., and about 3.6 million units were given away in Canada. Consumers should immediately take these wristbands away from children and return them to any McDonald’s store. You can get a free replacement toy and either a yogurt tube or bag of apple slices.

The recalled item is a “Step-iT” activity wristband, which comes in two styles: “Activity Counter” and a motion activated “Light-up Band.” The Activity Counter comes in translucent plastic orange, blue, or green, and features a digital screen that tracks a child’s steps or other movement. The Light-up Band comes in translucent plastic red, purple, or orange and blinks light as the child moves. Both have a square face with the words “STEP-iT” printed on it and a button to depress and activate the wristband. The back of the square face has been etched with the words “Made for McDonalds.” The items were made in China.

These wristbands were distributed exclusively by McDonald’s restaurants nationwide. The dates of distribution were August 9, 2016 to August 17, 2016 with Happy Meals and Mighty Kids Meals. You can see pictures of the recalled product photos at the CPSC web site.
