More Stores Recall Maytag Blue Cheese for Listeria

More stores have posted recalls of Maytag Raw Milk Blue Cheese for possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. Other recalls for Maytag Blue Cheese have been posted by Schnucks, Whole Foods, and HyVee. No illnesses have been reported to date, but Listeria monocytogenes food poisoning can take up to 70 days to appear.

Blue Cheese Listeria RecallThe recall is for Kroger, KingSoopers, Frys, Ralphs, QFC, Smiths, FredMeyer, and Dillon stores in Atlanta, Cincinnati, Columbus, Michigan, Central, Louisville, Delta, Nashville, Mid-Atlantic, and Southwest. The recalled products are Maytag Cut & Wrap Blue Cheese 4009, Maytag Crumbled Blue Cheese Aged 60 Days 2536, Maytag Blue Cheese 8 ounce, Maytag Blue Cheese Aged 60 Days 2535, and Maytag Blue cheese 104.

Publix has also posted a recall of Maytag Blue Cheese 54089-00104 available at certain locations in Florida. Finally, Harris Teeter posted a recall of Maytag Blue Cheese Wedge with UPC number 0085408900104, sold in the Fresh Foods department.

If you purchased any of these recalled products, do not eat them. Discard them in a double bagged container so others cannot eat the cheese, or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Wash your hands after handling the cheese.

Then you must clean out your refrigerator using a mild bleach solution to kill any Listeria bacteria, which can grow at refrigerator temperatures. Wash your hands again after cleaning the fridge.

If you ate any of this recalled cheese, watch yourself for the symptoms of Listeria monocytogenes food poisoning for the next 70 days. Most people who do get sick with this illness get symptoms within a few weeks. Those symptoms include fever, stiff neck, flu-like symptoms, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Pregnant women can be seriously affected by this illness, which can cause miscarriage, stillbirth, premature labor, and infection in the newborn. If you do experience any of these symptoms, see your doctor and tell her you ate this recalled cheese.
