Possible Hepatitis A Exposure at Sandy Cinema in Oregon

Clackamas County Public Health officials are investigating a possible hepatitis A exposure at the Sandy Cinema in Sandy, Oregon. Anyone who ate or drank from the concession stand at that cinema at 16605 Champion Way during certain hours may have been exposed to the virus.

Hepatitis A shot CDCThe possible days and hours of exposure are: February 12, 2016 11:00 a.m. to closing; February 13, 2016 6:00 p.m. to closing; February 14, 2016 2:00 p.m. to closing; and February 15, 2016 1:30 p.m. to closing. If you ate anything or drank anything from the concession stand during those time periods, you should get a hepatitis A or immune globulin vaccination.

The hepatitis A case was first reported to Clackamas County Public Health on February 17, 2016. The theater owners have been fully cooperative. The risk to the public is extremely low and there is no continued risk.

If you have already had hepatitis A or have been immunized, you are protected. check with your doctor to make sure you are immunized. If you have not had a shot, you have two weeks to get either a hepatitis A vaccination or an immune globulin vaccination.

The County has established a call-in line to provide information for people who think they were exposed at 503-742-5320 which will be active from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 20, 2016. You can call that number with questions. Clackamas County is updating inventories in the region in anticipation of a demand.

Vaccinations will be available at Legacy Medical Group Firwood at 36860 Industrial Way in Sandy, Oregon, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on these dates: Tuesday, February 23, 2016; Wednesday, February 24, 2016, and Thursday, February 25, 2106. If you ate at the Cinema on February 12, 2016, you have until February 26, 2016 to get a shot. If you ate there on February 13, 2016, you have until February 27, 2016 to get a vaccination. If you ate at the Cinema on February 14, 2016, you have until February 28, 2016 to get a shot. If you ate there on February 15, 2016, you have until February 29, 2016 to get a shot.

Hepatitis A is a viral disease of the liver that is very contagious. It is spread person-to-person, through contaminated food and drink, and by touching contaminated surfaces. Symptoms of this illness include jaundice, fatigue, fever, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, clay-colored stools, and dark urine. Symptoms usually develop three to four weeks after exposure. A person is contagious before symptoms appear.
