Salmonella Cases Mount in Estill County, Kentucky

The number of confirmed cases of Salmonella infections and related hospitalizations continues to rise in Estill County, Kentucky. Of the 75 people sickened in a recent food poisoning outbreak, 51 have confirmed cases of salmonellosis and eleven people have been hospitalized, according to local station WKYT.

SalmonellaHealth officials are waiting or results of tests on food taken from a local restaurant where many people ate before they became ill. The restaurant has not been named by health authorities who said it voluntarily closed to aid the outbreak investigation.

The Eagles Roost sports bar and restaurant, in Irvine, closed temporarily.  A recent inspection there noted six violations including dishwasher water not being hot enough and bags of chicken breast and pulled pork being thawed at room temperature.

After the illnesses were reported, officials performed another inspection and found only one violation – for glasses at the bar being stored upside down, Eagles Roost owner Don Wiseman told Lex18.com.

Symptoms of a Salmonella infection including nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea that can be bloody usually appear six to seventy-two hours after infection and last up to a week. Those at highest risk to contract a Salmonella infection and develop severe complications from it include young children, seniors, those with compromised immune systems, and those who suffer from chronic illness.
