Those most at risk for Salmonella infection include young children, seniors and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of an infection include fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In some cases, the infection can travel to the bloodstream producing more severe illness.

The Salmonella strain in this outbreak is unusual, with fewer than five cases being reported in the county annually, according to the health department which received reports of the illnesses on June 27 and June 28.  Both people reported eating bacon cheeseburgers and French fries from the restaurant.

Public health field investigators, who went to the restaurant on  July 1, found several factors that could have contributed to this outbreak, including:  inadequate cleaning of equipment, inadequate handwashing, and inadequate handwashing facilities,” according to the health department.

Results of tests from samples collected from food-contact surfaces are pending.  At the time of a followup inspection, all violations had been corrected.
