Salmonella Outbreak in Estill County, Kentucky Sickens 49

Salmonella BacteriaA Salmonella outbreak at a restaurant in Estill County, Kentucky has sickened 49 people, eight of whom have been hospitalized, according to the Estill County Health Department. So far, one case has been culture confirmed and 23 of the illnesses are suspected cases.

County health officials are working with the state health department to determine the cause of the outbreak. They have not named the restaurant associated with the outbreak but say it has voluntarily decided to close to aid the outbreak investigation and allow for additional inspection.

According to a WKYT report, the Eagles Roost sports bar and restaurant, in Irvine, has closed temporarily posting a handwritten sign on its door reading “Closed Until Further Notice Thank You!!” The station cites a recent inspection report with six violations including dishwasher water not being hot enough and bags of chicken breast and pulled pork being thawed at room temperature.

Symptoms of a Salmonella infection including nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea that can be bloody usually appear six to seventy-two hours after infection and last up to a week. Those at highest risk to contract a Salmonella infection and develop complications from it include young children, seniors, those with compromised immune systems, and those who suffer from chronic illness.
