Silver Springs Farms Recalls Ground Beef for Possible E. coli

Silver Springs Farms of Pennsylvania is recalling about 740 pounds of ground beef that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. These products were shipped to a distributor in Virginia. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with the consumption of this product.

The ground beef was produced on August 19, 2016. It consists of 20 pound cases containing 4 packages of 5 pound ground beef 80/20. It has the establishment number “EST. 4771” inside the USDA mark of inspection. The problem was discovered during a routine verification sampling performed by Silver Spring Farms.

This recall highlights the fact that all ground beef and all ground meat products should be cooked to a minimum internal temperature of 160°F to kill pathogenic bacteria. FSIS and the company are concerned that some of the product may be frozen and in consumers’ freezers.

If you purchased any of this ground beef, do not use it or eat it, even if you plan to cook it thoroughly. Throw it away in a sealed container or take it back to the place of purchase for a full refund.
