Standard Northern Nova Oysters Recall in Halifax, NS

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is currently investigating a company-issued recall by Fisherman’s Market International Inc. of its Standard Northern Nova Oysters, a brand sold for raw consumption. There is a possibility that these products were contaminated with Vibrio parahaemolyticus, a bacterium that can occur at high levels in coastal waters during warm summer months. No illnesses have been reported in association with the consumption of this product.

Oysters on Plate

Vibrio parahaemolyticus, typically found in raw or undercooked shellfish, can cause non-bloody diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal pain in susceptible people. The incubation period for the disease is 2-48 hours; if acquired, the illness can last from 2 to 8 days. Those at increased risk of contracting the illness include pregnant women, young children, the elderly, and people with compromised immune systems. Once acquired, this gastrointestinal illness can also be passed on to others through exposure to infected patients’ stool.

The affected raw oysters were sold by clerks of Fisherman’s Market International Inc. at 607 Bedford Hwy in Halifax, Nova Scotia from September 2nd through September 6th. Consumers who purchased oysters at this location and time are cautioned to either dispose of them or to return them to their place of purchase.

The CFIA has provided an online feedback form where consumers and industry members can acquire more information about this recall. Alternatively, concerned consumers can contact Fisherman’s Market International Inc.’s Quality Assurance Department at 902-445-2458, ext. 326 or ext. 282.
