SunOpta Large Bags of Sunflower Seeds Recalled for Listeria

C.J. Dannemiller Co. is recalling SunOpta 50# bags and 30# cases of roasted sunflower kernels roasted and salted, and sunflower kernels roasted with no salt because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria. No illnesses have been reported to date, but listeriosis, the illness caused by this bacteria, can take up to 70 days to appear.

The recalled products were distributed in these states: Arkansas, Virginia, Indiana, and Michigan in bulk packaging between February 22, 2016 and May 17, 2016. The product is in a 50 pound, white paper bag marked with lot codes: 8B6M17, 8D6M12, 8D6M11. The lot code is located on the top center of the bag. It was also sold in a 30 pound brown corrugated case with MFG DATE of 3/21/16 or 3/28/16. MFG DATE is on the product label.

If you purchased either of these products, do not eat them and do not distribute them. Return them to the store where you purchased them for a refund.

Clean out wherever you had stored these sunflower seeds with a mild bleach solution to kill any bacteria. Listeria monocytogenes bacteria can grow at refrigerator temperatures and freezing does not kill it.
