Sunrich Naturals, Planters Sunflowers Recall for Listeria Expanded

SunOpta is expanding its voluntary recall of sunflower kernels products for possible Listeria monocytogenes bacteria. No illnesses have been reported to date.

Planters Sunflower Listeria RecallThe initial recall included products made at the SunOpta’s Crookston, Minnesota facility between February 1, 2016 and February 9, 2016. The expanded recall includes product produced February 20, 2016 through April 21, 2016, when the facility stopped production.

The recalled products are Sunrich Naturals Sunflower Kernel in 1 ounce packages. The UPC number of this product is 810304032122. You can see the long list of lot numbers and best by dates of these recalled products at the FDA web site. Also recalled is 3 ounce packages of Planters Sunflower Kernels with UPC number 029000012714. You can see the lot numbers and best by dates of that product at the FDA web site as well.

These products were distributed to distribution centers during the months of March and April 2016 in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania and Texas and may be redistributed to other states nationwide.

If you purchased these products, do not eat them. Throw them away in a sealed container or return to the place of purchase for a full refund. Then clean out your pantry or cupboard or wherever the products were stored with a mild bleach solution to kill any remaining bacteria.

If you ate any of these recalled products, watch yourself for the symptoms of listeriosis, the illness caused by this bacteria, for the next 70 days. Those symptoms are like the flu, and include severe headache, high fever, neck stiffness, muscle aches, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. If you do get sick, see your doctor.
