SYSCO and Reser’s Salads Recalled in Canada for Listeria

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency and Reser’s Fine Foods are recalling two salads for possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with the consumption of these recalled items, but listeriosis, the illness caused by this bacteria, can take up to 70 days to appear.

The recalled products are Classic SYSCO Elbow Macaroni Salad in 3.63 kg packages. The code on the product is MAY-07-16 #10, and the UPC number is 0 74865 08459 8. The second recalled product is Reser’s Deviled Egg Potato Salad in 3.63 kg packages. The code on that product is APR-28-16 #10, and the UPC number is 71117 00225.

If you purchased these salads, do not eat them. Throw them away or return them to the place of purchase for a refund. This recall was triggered by a recall in the United States. After you have discarded the salads, clean your fridge with a mild bleach solution to kill any remaining bacteria. You can see pictures of the recalled products at the CFIA web site.

If you ate either of these products, watch yourself for the symptoms of listeriosis for the next 70 days. Those symptoms include fever, nausea, vomiting, muscle aches, severe headache, and neck stiffness. Pregnant women can only be mildly ill, but this sickness can cause miscarriage, stillbirth, premature labor, and infection in the newborn.
