Two Seafood Products Recalled in Canada for Histamine

Two seafood products are being recalled in Canada for histamines, according to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. Histamines in fish can cause a form of food poisoning called scombroid poisoning, which is sometimes confused with an allergic reaction to fish. There have been reported illnesses associated with the consumption of blue marlin loins and the blue marlin used to make the recalled skewers, as identified below. The recalls were triggered by consumer complaints.

Inadequate refrigeration or spoiled fish increase the levels of bacteria in the product that converts histidine to high levels of histamine. Symptoms of scombroid poisoning include wheezing, headache, nausea, burning sensation in the mouth, flushing of the face and body, abdominal cramps, fainting, blurred vision, diarrhea, and swelling of the face and tongue.

The first recalled product is Sea Delight brand Blue Marlin Loins. They were sold in Ontario, Quebec, and possibly nationally. The products are Blue Marlin Loins in variable sizes (usually 3 to 5 pounds), with no UPC number. All units sold up to and including August 1, 2016 are recalled. Blue Marlin Loins in 15 pound (6.8 kg) size are recalled, with UPC number 1 84 36544 90159 3, lot number 500290, production date 14 SEP 17, and best before date 16 SEP 16. Finally, Blue Marlin Loins in 15 pound packages with UPC number 1 843654 490109 8, lot number 29CON0, and best before date SEP/17/2017 are recalled.

If you aren’t sure if you bought these products, ask your retailer. They are Blue Marlin and Vegetable Skewers sold individually, up to and including August 2, 2016. Also recalled are the same product sold in 4 packs of 900 grams, with UPC number 1 06 28477 10162 3 and Projet codes 300576 and 300585.
