Weekly Food Recall Roundup: July 17, 2016

Food Recalls in the U.S.

Pathogens

Two flavors of Betty Crocker cake mix sold in the U.S. and one flavor sold in Canada have been added to General Mills’ previously announced E. coli flour recall from July 1, 2016.  Betty Crocker Delights Super Moist Party Rainbow Chip Cake Mix (called Betty Crocker Super Moist Rainbow Bit Cake Mix in Canada) and Betty Crocker Delights Super Moist Carrot Cake Mix.

International Commissary Corporation recalled Marie Callender’s Cheese Biscuit Mix because it may be contaminated with E. coli O121. This product was made using recalled General Mills flour that is linked to a multistate food poisoning outbreak. No illnesses have been reported in connection to the Marie Callender’s product.

Kerry Inc. of Beloit, Wisconsin recalled two lots of its Golden Dipt® Jalapeño Breader product for possible E.coil 0121 contamination, according to a news release issued today by the FDA.

Simmons Prepared Foods of Arkansas recalled 5,850 pounds of frozen, heat treated, not ready to eat (NRTE)chicken products for possible E. coli O121. These products were made with recalled flour from General Mills that is linked to a multistate outbreak. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with the consumption of these products.

Undeclared Allergens

Monogram Appetizers of Wisconsin is recalled 5,000 cases of Poppers Mozzarella Cheese Sticks because it may contain undeclared egg, one of the major food allergens. Anyone who is allergic to egg could have a serious reaction if they eat this product.

Michael Angelo’s Gourmet Foods of Texas recalled 4,225 pounds of frozen shrimp scampi products because they may contain chicken, egg, and soy. Anyone who is allergic to those ingredients could have a serious reaction if they eat this product.

Baptista’s Bakery, Inc. recalled of a limited number of 30 oz. Snack Factory® Original Pretzel Crisps® packages because they may contain undeclared milk ingredients. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk run the risk of a serious or life threatening allergic reaction if they consume the affected product.

The Kroger Co. recalled its Deluxe S’mores Ice cream sold in retail chains because of undeclared peanut allergens the product may potentially contain.

Ikea recalled candy bars for undeclared allergens milk, hazelnut and almonds. They include: CHOKLAND MÖRK, CHOKLAND MÖRK 70%, CHOKLAD LINGON & BLABAR, CHOKLAD NÖT, GODIS CHOKLADKROKANT, GODIS CHOKLADRAN and CHOKLAD LJUS.

Lack of Inspection

The recall of frozen Swai fillets by U.S. Cado Holdings is being expanded again. In the first recall on June 20, 2016, 25,760 pounds of the products were recalled. The first expansion was for another 2,235 pounds of products on June 25, and an additional 1,650 pounds are now being recalled.

Extraneous Material

ConAgra’s P.F. Chang’s frozen chicken and beef entrees for possible foreign matter contamination has been expanded to include more products. Now 195,597 more pounds of products are included in the recall for possible  metal fragments. Click here for more information and  to see pictures of labels

Food Recalls in Canada

Pathogens

A & E Distribution recalled  H. Van Wijnen brand Smoked Atlantic Salmon Filet  because it may permit the growth of Clostridium botulinum bacteria if sold refrigerated.

Golden Dipt brand Jalapeño Breader was recalled because it may be contaminated with E. coli O121 bacteria. In the United States, the product was recalled because it was made using recalled General Mills flour.

Undeclared Allergens

Ikea Canada is updating its recall of chocolate bars for undeclared tree nuts and milk, two of the major food allergens. Anyone who is allergic to nuts or milk or who is lactose intolerant could have a serious reaction if they consume these products. No illnesses have been reported to date.

Other

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Ocean Brands is recalled Flaked White Tuna and Solid White Tuna because the cans may be leaking, which makes them unsafe.
