Weekly Food Recall Roundup: May 22, 2016

Lasso roundupLots of updates to Listeria recalls for frozen vegetables and sunflower kernels this week. Listeria is a bacteria that can cause serious, sometimes fatal infections. Those most at risk are young children, seniors and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms, which can take 70 days to develop,  include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, Among pregnant women, Listeria infections can cause miscarriages and stillbirths.

SunOpta expanded its Listeria recall of Sunflower kernels and touched off a series others including Hy-Vee Trail Mix;  Papa John’s Oriental Salad sold at Albertsons, Safeway, Bashas and Food 4 Less; Dakota Style sunflower kernels; an expansion of Treehouse Foods recall for products sold under the brand names Southern Grove, Amport Foods, Naturally Select, Delish, Nice! and Nature’s Harvest, Sunrich and Planters sunflower kernels; Quaker Granola Bars; Uncle Buck’s trail mix sold at Bass Pro Shops; Cape Cod Cranberry Trail Mix;

The Listeria frozen vegetable recall expanded to include Hy-Vee frozen Vegetable Fried Rice and Chicken Fried Rice. Stahlbush Island Farms is updated its recall of Stahlbush Individually Quick Frozen (IQF) Green Beans for possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. Ajinomoto Windsor updated its recall of some not ready to eat frozen foods because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria.

Undeclared allergens

Marie Callender’s Salisbury Steak and Molly’s Kitchen Macaroni & Beef Recall were recalled for undeclared fish allergen.

The Caramel Factory recalled candies for undeclared allergens.

Aurnish Enterprises Corporation recalled pork dumplings for undeclared MSG. Consumers who cannot tolerate MSG should not eat this product.

The Farmers Market Chopped Asian Salad Kit recalled for possible undeclared soy, almonds, and wheat, three of the main food allergens.

Foreign material

Pilgrim’s Pride is expanded the recall of poultry products for possible foreign material contamination for the third time.

Dietary Supplements

SOS Telecom recalled unapproved drugs marketed and sold as dietary supplements. All lots of these products are recalled because they contain Sildenafil, a PDE-5 inhibitor which is the active ingredient in an FDA-approved drug for erectile dysfunction. SIldenafil can interact with nitrates in some prescription drugs and can lower blood pressure to dangerous levels.

In Canada

New Moon Tea recalled two of its products in Canada because it could be contaminated with Salmonella bacteria. No illnesses have been reported in connection with the consumption of these products. They were sold in British Columbia and also through internet sales. The recalled products are all New Moon Tea Co. brands. They include Sunrise Tea in 25 gram and 50 gram packages. There is no UPC number. Those products were sold from January 2015 through May 18, 2016. Also recalled is Turmeric Tonic in 26 gram packages. There is no UPC number on that product, and it was sold from October 2015 to May 18, 2016.
