Evanger’s Pet Food Recall Expands, Includes Another Product

The FDA has posted a notice on its page about the recalled Evanger’s and Against the Grain canned dog foods, stating that on February 27, 2017, the FDA became aware that Evanger’s Dog and Cat Food was notifying its distributors and retailers of a new product recall, and expanding the previous recall for Evanger’s and Against the Grain products.

The products are potentially contaminated with pentobarbital, a drug used to euthanize animals. The FDA was unable to determine from records whether any other products were made from the beef in the recalled products. There were “significant concerns with conditions” at the Wheeling, Illinois and Markham, Illinois plants during an FDA inspection.

The new recall is for Evanger’s Braised Beef Chunks with Gravy. The previous recall for Evanger’s canned Hunk of Beef and Against the Grain’s Grain Free Pulled Beef with Gravy have more lots included in the recall.

The 12 ounce cans of dog food being recalled have expiration dates of December 2019 through January 2021. They include Evanger’s Hunk of Beef with the second half of the barcode 20109; Evanger’s Braised Beef with the second half of the barcode 20107, and Against the Grain Pulled Beef with the second half of the barcode 80001.

Five dogs in a single household suffered acute neurological symptoms after eating the Evanger’s Hunk of Beef product. One dog was euthanized, three others have recovered, and the fifth dog that ate the least amount of food have recovered. Pentobarbital was found in an open can of the product and in the deceased dog.

If you have purchased these products, do not feed them to your animals. Throw them away or take them back to the place of purchase for a refund.
