Evanger’s Recalls Dog Food for Pentobarbital

Evanger’s Dog & Cat Food of Illinois is voluntarily recalling some lots of its Hunk of Beef product because it may be contamianted with Pentobarbital. The drug was found in one lot of Hunk of Beef Au Jus. Pentobarbital is a barbiturate and is used as a sedative. It can cause drowsiness, dizziness, excitement, loss of balance, nausea, and death. Five dogs have been sickened after eating this product, and one dog died after consuming the food with lot number 1816E06HB13.

The lot numbers of the recalled product start with 1816E03HB, 1816E04HB, 1816E06HB, 1816E07HB, and 1816E13HB, and have an expiration date of June 2020. The second half of the barcode reads 20109, which can be found on the back of the product label. Five lots of food were produced from the company’s supplier’s lot of beef.

The product is sold in 12 ounce cans. It was sold to retail locations and online in Washington, California, Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Massachusetts, Maryland, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. The product was manufactured the week of June 6 – June 13, 2016.

If you purchased this product, do not give it to your dog. Throw it away in a sealed or double bagged package, or take it back to the place of purchase for a full refund.
