Guggisberg Cheese is recalling various types of cheeses for possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. The products were manufactured by Guggisberg Cheese and by Deutsch Kase Haus LLC under the Guggisberg label. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with the consumption of these products.
You can see the long list of recalled products along with package sizes, product photos, UPC numbers, and use by dates at the FDA web site. The products may have been purchased at deli counters in custom sizes. The recalled products are all Guggisberg brand. They include Cheddar Horns, Colby Horns, Farmer’s Cheese Horns, Garden Vegetable Horns, Marble Horns, Marble Longhorn, Pepper Jack Horns, Thunder Jack Horns, Guggisberg exact Marble Mini Rounds, Guggisberg exact Colby mini rounds, Guggisberg exact Pepper Jack Mini Rounds, and Guggisberg Cheese with Yogurt cultures deli horns.
These cheeses were manufactured between September 1, 2016 and January 27, 2017. They were packaged in clear plastic and sold primarily in retail stores at deli counters and deli cases in Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Illinois, and West Virginia.
If you purchased any of these products, do not eat them. Throw them away in sealed or double bagged packages, or take them back to the place of purchase for a refund.
Wash your hands well after handling these products. After you get rid of the products, clean out your refrigerator with a mild bleach solution to kill any remaining bacteria. Listeria monocytogenes bacteria can grow at refrigerator temperatures, and freezing does not kill it..
If you ate any of these recalled products, monitor yourself for the symptoms of listeriosis, the illness caused by this bacteria, for the next 70 days. Symptoms of listeriosis include high fever, abdominal pain, diarrhea, neck stiffness, nausea, and severe headache. Pregnant women need to be especially wary of this illness since it can cause miscarriage and stillbirth, even if the woman only has a mild, flu-like illness. If you do get sick, see your doctor and tell her you ate this recalled product.
