Hyland’s Baby Teething Tablets Recalled for Inconsistent Belladonna

Standard Homeopathic Company is recalling all lots of Hyland’s Baby Teething Tablets and Hyland’s Baby Nighttime Teething Tablets sold in retail stores because they have inconsistent amounts of belladonna alkaloids that may differ from the amount listed on the label. Belladonna represents a serious health hazard to children and its effects are unpredictable, according to the FDA. In fact, the Agency told the company, “There is no known safe dose or toxic dose of belladonna in children because of the many factors that affect it.”

These products are used to provide temporary relief of teething symptoms in children. And the recall includes all products that may be in stock at retail stores now.

The Company stopped making and shipping the medicines in October 2016. The FDA has been investigating more than 400 adverse events associated with these products that have been reported over the last six years.

If you purchased one of these products, do not give it to your child. Throw it away or take it back to the store where you bought it for a refund.

If your child has been experiencing problems after using one of these products, contact your healthcare provider. Adverse events that have been reported to the FDA include, “seizure, death, fever, shortness of breath, lethargy, constipation, vomiting, sleepiness, tremor, agitation, and irritability.” You can also report the problem to the FDA.

Belladonna is a plant that can be poisonous. It is used as a sedative and cold remedy. Chemicals in the plant can block functions of the central nervous system. WebMD says that Belladonna is “likely unsafe” when taken by mouth.
