Queso De La Costa Cheese Recalled for Possible Listeria

La Nice Products of Florida is recalling 6,000 pounds of cheese because it may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria. The cheese was distributed in California through supermarkets and other retail stores. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this issue.

The recalled products were distributed in one pound (16 ounce) opaque plastic bags with the name: Quesos De La Costa Queso Duro Blando Hard Soft Cheese. The name is surrounded by an orange border and there is a small cow on the label. It is a white cheese. The cheese has an expiration date of August 31, 2017 and UPC number 8 52304 74023 2. The lot number is 254.

The recall is a result of sampling by the Florida Department of Agriculture. If you purchased this cheese, do not eat it. Throw it away in a secure garbage can or take it back to the place of purchase for a refund.

Clean out your refrigerator with a mild bleach solution to kill any remaining bacteria. Wash your hands after handling this product.

If you ate this cheese, monitor yourself for the symptoms of listeriosis, the illness caused by this bacteria, for the next 70 days. That illness may manifest as flu-like symptoms, but you could also experience high fever, severe headache, stiff neck, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Pregnant women may only be mildly ill, but listeriosis can cause miscarriage, stillbirth, and premature labor. If you do feel sick, see your doctor.
