Saputo Recalls Gouda Cheese for Possible Listeria

Saputo Inc. is voluntarily recalling some Gouda cheese products after Deutsch Kase Haus notified them that some of the products it supplied to Saputo’s Green Bay, Wisconsin facility may have been contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this issue.

The recalled products are Great Midwest® Applewood Smoked Gouda Cheese, either in random weights of about 6 pounds, or in random weight slices or chunks cut at stores. There was no UPC number for the random weight cheeses, but there was a code on the product of SELL BY MAY 22 17 G7/1 00:00. All code dates of the cheeses cut at stores are recalled. Also recalled is Dutchmark® brand Pasteurized Processed Smoked Gouda Cheese in random weight size of about 2 pounds. There was no UPC number on the product, but the code on the product is BEST WHEN USED BY: 11-18-17.

The cheeses were sold to retailers nationwide. The Great Midwest Applewood® Smoked Gouda cheeses were sold primarily in retail stores at deli counters and deli cases. If you purchased either of these cheeses, do not eat them. Throw them away in a sealed package or take them back to the place of purchase for a refund. Then clean out your refrigerator with a mild bleach solution to kill any bacteria.

If you ate these recalled products, watch yourself for the symptoms of Listeria monocytogenes food poisoning for the next 70 days. Those symptoms include high fever, stiff neck, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and a severe headache. Pregnant women may only have a mild flu-like illness, but listeriosis can cause stillbirth and miscarriage. If you do get sick, see your doctor.
