Whole Foods Expands Listeria Vulto Creamery Cheese Recall

In response to Vulto Creamery’s expanded recall of raw milk cheeses for possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination over the weekend, Whole Foods Market is expanding its recall of their products. These cheese were sold in eight stores in Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York.

As of March 10, 2017, Vulto Creamery is reporting that the bacteria is responsible for six illnesses and two deaths. But Whole Foods Market has not received any reports of illness or injuries from customers who purchased the raw cheeses from their stores.

The recall expansion includes Vulto Creamery Andes, Hamden, and Walton Umber raw milk cheeses. They were cut and packaged in clear plastic wrap with scale labels beginning with PLU codes 0200307, 0201357 or 0206308 and “sell by” dates from 01/02/2017 to 04/02/2017.

Walton Umber Cheese is an unpasteurized cow’s milk cheese

These cheeses were sold at these Whole Food Markets: 94 Derby Street, Hingham, Massachusetts; 1255 Raritan Road Unit 150, Clark, New Jersey; 300 Bergen Town Center, Paramus, New Jersey; 238 Bedford Avenue, Brooklyn, New York; 1095 Avenue of the Americas, New York, New York; 270 Greenwich Street, New York, New York; 4 Union Square South, New York, New York; and 575 Boston Post Road, Port Chester, New York. If you purchased these cheeses from these stores, do not eat them. Throw them away in a sealed container or take them or the receipts back for a refund.

Then clean out your refrigerator with a mild bleach solution, since Listeria bacteria can grow at refrigerator temperatures. Wash your hands with soap and water after handling these cheeses.

If you ate any of these recalled cheeses, watch yourself for the symptoms of Listeria monocytogenes food poisoning for the next 70 days. Those symptoms include high fever, stiff neck, headache, nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps. Pregnant women can suffer miscarriages and stillbirth from this infection, even if they have mild or no symptoms. If you do feel ill, see your doctor.
