The symptoms of an E. coli infection include severe and painful abdominal and stomach cramps, diarrhea that may be bloody. Some people may experience vomiting and may have a mild fever.

People who are more likely to have a serious complication with this infection are the very young, the elderly, and anyone with a compromised immune system or chronic illness. Sometimes, this infection can develop into hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), which is a type of kidney failure.
