Some Four Seasons Marketplace Smoked Salmon Products Recalled for Possible Botulism in Canada

Some Four Seasoning Marketplace smoked salmon products are being recalled for possible Clostridium botulinum contamination in Canada, according t the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this issue.

The products were sold from the Four Seasons Marketplace at 4099 Erin Mills Parkway in Mississauga, Ontario. The recalled products include Four Seasons Marketplace Apple Cider Smoke Salmon in variable size packages. The codes on that product are Best Before: 2018MA23, and 2018MA29. The UPC number starts with 0204051. The second recalled product is Four Seasons Marketplace Vodka Smoked Salmon, also in variable sized packages. The best before date on that package is 2018MA23. And the UPC number on the product starts with 0204028.

If you purchased either of these products, do not eat them. Throw them away in a sealed or double bagged package so other people and animals can’t access them, or take them back to the store where you bought them for a refund.

Foods contaminated with the botulinum toxin will not look, smell, or taste different or spoiled, and the bacteria and toxin will not affect the texture. But a tiny amount of the toxin, produced by the Clostridium botulinum spore, can kill an adult.

Symptoms of botulism food poisoning include difficulty swallowing, drooping eyelids, double or blurred vision, facial paralysis, loss of facial expression, and a change in the sound of the voice, including hoarseness. There is an antidote available to the toxin, but it must be administered in a hospital. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should be taken to to a doctor immediately.
