Simmons NRTE Chicken Products Recalled for Possible E. coli O121

Simmons Prepared Foods of Arkansas is recalling 5,850 pounds of frozen, heat treated, not ready to eat (NRTE) chicken products because they may be contaminated with E. coli O121. These products were made with recalled flour from General Mills that is linked to a multistate outbreak. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with the consumption of these products. These items were distributed to Arkansas for institutional use. They include 30 pound net weight case count containers containing six, 5-pound bags in clear film of "Simmons Uncooked Chicken Tenderloin Fritters," with a case code 31473. Two flavors of Betty Crocker Cake Mix are being recalled for possible E. coli O121 contamination. This is a secondary recall because the flour used to make this product was recalled and is linked to an E. coli O121 outbreak in the U.S. No illnesses reported to date have been connected to the cake mix. The two flavors include Betty Crocker Delights Super Moist Party Rainbow Chip Cake Mix. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency and General Mills Canada are recalling Betty Crockpot Super Moist Cake Mix Rainbow Bit for possible E. coli contamination. This is another secondary recall, since the product contains General Mills flour that has been recalled for contamination and is linked to an E. coli outbreak in the United States. No illnesses have been reported in connection with the consumption of this product. The recalled product is Betty Crocker Super Moist Cake Mix Rainbow Bit in 432 gram packages. Kabob’s Acquisition Recalls Products Made with General Mills Flour

Food Poisoning Bulletin has received some questions about secondary recalls of products linked to the General Mills' flour recall for E. coli contamination. These recalls occur because an ingredient used to make those products has been recalled. This has started, with the recall of tons of raw, not-ready-to-eat meat and poultry products. Kabob's Acquisition is recalling 44,850 pounds of raw intact and heat treated, not-ready-to-eat meat and poultry products that were made with recalled General Mills flour. They may be adulterated with E. coli O121. The problem with products such as these is that cross-contamination can take place between the uncooked product and utensils, countertops, and other foods that are not cooked before they are consumed. FDA Issues Details of General Mills E. coli Outbreak Investigation

The FDA has issued details of their investigation into the E. coli O121 outbreak linked to recalled General Mills flour. Flour is not an ingredient most people connect with food poisoning, but it is a raw agricultural product and can be contamianted with pathogenic bacteria. One of the problems with recalls of flour is that many people do not keep this product in its original packaging. Most decant the flour into another container and discard the wrapping. But three people who were sickened in this outbreak kept the flour in its packaging, and helped the government track down the culprit in this outbreak. FDA Finds E. coli O121 in Bag of Gold Medal Flour

The FDA has released a statement confirming that they found E. coli O121 isolates from an open sample of General Mills flour belonging to a consumer who was sickened with the pathogenic bacteria. The government used whole genome sequencing to analyze the E. coli bacteria. The isolate was closely genetically related to the clinical isolates taken from sick people. The flour came from a lot that General Mills has recalled. At least 38 people in 20 states have been sickened with the outbreak strain of E. coli O121. Sprouts Spread E. coli to Jimmy John’s, Pita Pit, Daanen’s in 2014

Washington and Idaho combined public health resources in 2014 to help solve an outbreak that spread E. coli O121 to people who ate clover sprouts at Jimmy John's Gourmet Sandwiches, the Pita Pit and Daanen's Deli, according to a review of state and federal food poisoning reports. "Raw clover sprouts produced by Evergreen Fresh Sprouts, LLC of Idaho was the likely source of this outbreak,'' the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) wrote in its final update on the sprouts E. coli outbreak. Clover Sprout E. coli Outbreak Ends, 19 in 6 States Sickened

An E. coli outbreak linked to raw clover sprouts served  at Jimmy John's, Pita Pit and Daanen’s Deli has ended after sickening 19 people in six states, according to a report form the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  Sixteen people were hospitalized. The E.coli O121 outbreak strain hit Washington state hardest with 11 cases. Illnesses reported from other states were as follows: California (1), Idaho (3), Michigan (1), Montana (2), Utah (1), and Washington (11). CDC Updates E. coli Outbreak Linked to Jimmy John’s Sprouts

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has updated their investigation into the E. coli O121 outbreak linked to raw clover sprouts served at Jimmy John's and other restaurants. As of June 27, 2014, the case count stands at 18. The case count per state is: Idaho (3), Michigan (1), Montana (2), Utah (1), and Washington (11). Forty-four percent of ill persons have been hospitalized in this outbreak. No one has developed hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) and no deaths have been reported. Illnesses range from May 1, 2014 to May 20, 2014. Ill persons range in age from 11 years to 45 years, with a median age of 27 years. Seventy-six percent of ill persons are female. Farm Rich E. coli O121 Outbreak Grows to 32 Ill

The outbreak of E. coli O121 infections linked to the Farm Rich brand frozen food products has grown to include 32 people in 18 states, according to the CDC. Nine people have been hospitalized. There are no deaths. Two patients have developed hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a type of kidney failure. All Farm Rich products, including Market Day and Schwan's, that were made at the company's Waycross, Georgia plant have been recalled.
