Sprout Creek Farm Recalls Margie Cheese For Possible Listeria Contamination

Sprout Creek Farm of Poughkeepsie, New York is recalling 132 wheels of “Margie” cheese because it may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria. That same type cheese, with a different make date and best by date was recalled on October 1, 2018 for improper pasteurization. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem.

The Margie cheese, 132 wheels, was distributed to nine locations in New York state. It is a soft, white rind, cow’s milk cheese that is packaged with a green round label, wrapped in white milk paper in one pound wheels. The recalled cheese has a lot number make date of 10-9-18 and the best by date of 12-9-18. The recall was a result of FDA inspection of Sprout Creek Farm’s cheese production facility. Samples were taken during inspection, sent to an FDA lab for testing, and Listeria monocytogenes bacteria was found in the cheese.

The cheese was sold at these locations: Hudson Valley Harvest at 750 Enterprise Dr, Kingston, NY 12401; Mohonk Mountain House at 1000 Mountain Rest Rd, New Paltz, NY 12561; Olsen and Company at 81 Partition St, Saugerties, NY 12477; Gossetts Market at 1202 Old Post Rd, South Salem, NY 10590; Tannat Wine and Cheese at 4736 Broadway, New York, NY 10040; and Sheep and Wool Fest at Rhinebeck, Dutchess County Fair Grounds. It was also sold at Adams Fairacre Farms at 765 Dutchess Turnpike, Poughkeepsie, NY 12603; Stinky Brooklyn at 215 Smith St, Brooklyn, NY 11231; and Ocean House Oyster Bar & Grill at 49 N Riverside Ave, Croton-On-Hudson, NY 10520.

If you purchased this cheese, don’t eat it. Throw it away after wrapping it in plastic wrap or foil and putting it into a secure garbage can, or take it back to the place of purchase for a refund.

Then, clean out your refrigerator with a mild bleach solution to kill any bacteria. Wipe down other containers in the fridge with that solution, then wipe with clean water and dry. Listeria monocytogenes bacteria can grow at temperatures below 40°F, and freezing doesn’t kill it.
