Stop & Shop Recalls Bean Salad for Possible Listeria

The chain Stop & Shop Supermarkets has recalled Calico Bean Salad made by Costa Fruit & Product because it may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The product was sold in the salad bars at the stores. Anyone who bought that salad between July 18, 2012 and July 26, 2012 should discard it and bring the receipt to the place of purchase for a full refund.

There have not been any illnesses reported in connection with the consumption of this product. The symptoms of listeriosis include severe headache, high fever, nausea, and neck stiffness. Pregnant women can often have very mild symptoms but then suffer miscarriage or stillbirth. The elderly, the very young, and those with chronic illnesses and compromised immune systems are most susceptible to Listeria infections.
