Brad’s Plant Based Kale and Veggie Chips are being recalled for thallium. This is a naturally occurring heavy metal found in the soil, which can be taken up by plants as they grow, especially by cruciferous vegetables such as radishes and cabbage. Acute or chronic exposure to this metal at relatively high levels can cause gastroenteritis, damage to peripheral nerves, and hair loss. The recall notice was triggered when a consumer reported having elevated thallium levels. The recalling firm is Snack Right Super Foods, Inc., doing business as Brad’s Raw Chips of Coral Gables, Florida.

In May 2026, the California Department of Public Health told consumers not to eat certain Brad’s Plant Based products after it investigated an inquiry from one individual who had elevated thallium levels. The Department collected samples at retail stores in the Sacramento area, and laboratory testing found elevated thallium levels in multiple varieties. The recall was initiated after the FDA advised the firm of thallium in tested products. Brassica crops such as kale are known to accumulate certain elements from soil. The manufacturing process did not introduce the contaminant; however, the dehydration process removes about 85 to 90 percent of the product’s water, which concentrates elements already present in the fresh kale.
These items were sold nationwide through KeHE Distributors and United Natural Foods, and sold to five individual customers, who were not named. About 25,000 bags were sold, between October 2025 and December 2025. The recalled products include:
