Wholesome Pantry Apple Sauce is being recalled for elevated patulin levels. Patulin is a mycotoxin produced by molds that can grow on apples. Long term exposure from patulin ingestion can cause immune suppression, nerve damage, headache, fever, and nausea. These issues can occur with elevated exposure over time. No illnesses have been reported to the company to date in connection with the consumption of this item. The recalling firm is Wakefern Food Corporation of Keasbey, New Jersey.
Routine testing conducted by the FDA identified the elevated patulin. The apple sauce was sold through WakeFern supermarket banners ShopRite, Price Rite Marketplace, The Fresh Grocer, Gourmet Garage, and Fairway Market. No other products sold at those supermarkets are affected by this recall.
The recalled product is Wholesome Pantry Organic Unsweetened Applesauce that is packaged in 23 ounce clear plastic jar containers. The label on the jar is white with the picture of an apple, green banners, and printing in black and green. The UPC number that is stamped on the product label is 04119005677. The products have a best by date of June 16, 2027.
If you bought this apple sauce, do not eat it. You can throw it away in a secure garbage can with a tight fitting lid after first double bagging or wrapping it so other people can’t see it, or you can take it back to the store where you purchased it for a full refund.
