Bob’s Red Mill Recalls One Lot of Organic Amaranth Flour For Possible Salmonella Contamination

Bob’s Red Mill Natural Foods is recalling 2,099 cases of Organic Amaranth Flour sold in 22 ounce packages, after recent testing found Salmonella bacteria in a single lot of the product.  No illnesses have been reported to the company in connection with this recall.

The recalled product is Organic Amaranth Flour in 22 ounce containers. It has a sell by date of 11/26/2015, and a lot number of 169617, which can be found on the site of the package, near the top of the panel. The UPC number for this product is 0 39978 00911 1.

You may notice that the sell by date was in 2015. This product was found on the shelves of one retail store, so the recall is being issued out of an abundance of caution. There may be containers of this product in consumer’s homes as well. Check your freezer to see if you have it.

The product and this specific lot was distributed in California, Florida, Michigan, North Dakota, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Texas, and Washington starting on June 11, 2014. The shipment stopped on August 7, 2014. The Organic Amaranth Flour was distributed through retailers and distributors nationwide, according to the notice on the Bob’s Red Mill web site.

Other sell by dates and lot numbers are not affected by this recall. Bob’s Red Mill has started an investigation of this problem in their supply chain.

If you bought this product, do not use it, even if you plan to cook with it. Throw it away in a sealed or double bagged package, or take it back to the store where you bought it for a full refund.

It’s a good idea to then clean out your pantry or freezer, or wherever you stored this product, with a mild bleach solution to kill any bacteria. Wash your hands well with water and soap after handling the product and after cleaning.
