Northfork Bison Distributions, of Quebec, Canada, is recalling ground bison products in Canada because they may be contaminated with E. coli O121 and E. coli O103. These products are linked to an outbreak in the United States that has sickened at least 21 people, but there are no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products in Canada. Some of these products were recalled in the U.S. on July 16, 2019.
The recalled products were sold nationwide at the retail level. The recalled products are Natural Frontier Foods Bison – ground meat in 208 gram packages, with UPC number 6 76842 00147 7; Sensations Extra Lean Ground Bison in 280 gram packages, with UPC number 6 23682 11159 0; and La Terre des Bisons Bison ground (lean) in 1.5 pound containers with UPC number 96768420002598.
Also recalled is Northfork Canadian Bison Ranch Bison ground regular in 1.25 kg packages, with UPC number 86768420002577; Northfork Canadian Bison Ranch Bison ground regular in 4.54 kg (10 pound) packages with UPC number 86768420002263; and Northfork Canadian Bison Ranch Bison ground 10 lbs regular (4.54 kg packages) with UPC number 96768420111061. Finally, Northfork Canadian Bison Ranch Bison Ground 1 lg regular (0.45 kg packages) with UPC number 96768420111054 is recalled, along with Northfork Canadian Bison Ranch Bison Burger 20 x 8oz (2 pound), with UPC number 96768420111092; and Northfork Canadian Bison Ranch Bison Burger 4 oz x 4 (1 pound packages) with UPC number 96768420111184.
All of these recalled products have different specific packed on dates. You can also see more pictures of product photos at that site. Please check the chart at the CFIA website carefully to see if you have purchased these items with these specific UPC numbers and pack dates. If you have, throw them away. Do not eat them even if you plan to cook them because of cross-contamination issues.
You can also return these products to the store where you bought them for a full refund. The CFIA is conducting a food safety investigation which may lead to more recalls. And the government is verifying that industry is removing these recalled products from the marketplace. And as always, handle ground meat with care and cook it to 160°F using a meat thermometer.
