Leaping Bear Eggs are linked to a Salmonella outbreak in Vermont that has sickened at least 14 people in that state, according to the Vermont Agency of Agriculture Food and Markets. The eggs have been recalled. The Leaping Bear Farm is located in Windsor County.
All eggs with cartons dated between June 1, 2026 and September 5, 2026 are included in the recall. You can see the long list of establishments that sold these eggs at the Vermont Agriculture web site. They include West River Farmers Market, Milkweed Farm, Deep Meadows Farm, South Woodstock Country Store, Woodstock Village Market, Putney Food Co-op, and the Putney Diner, among others.
The chicken eggs were distributed in cartons with the Leaping Bear Farm logo. They are labeled as Grade A Pasture Raised Organic Eggs.
The Vermont Department of Health has found Salmonella Enteritidis in the eggs and also in environmental samples taken from the farm. Other states also have genetically linked cases, but those states were not named in the notice.
Some of these eggs may still be at retail locations or in consumers’ homes. If you bought these eggs, do not eat them, even if you plan to cook them thoroughly because of the possibility of cross-contamination between the eggs and other items in your kitchen. You can throw the eggs away in a secure trash can with a tight fitting lid after first double bagging them so other people can’t see them, or you can take them back to the store where you purchased them for a full refund. Do not compost the eggs.
Then clean your kitchen, including items and surfaces that may have touched the eggs, with hot soapy water. If you ate these eggs, especially if they were consumed raw or undercooked (less than 160°F), monitor your health for the symptoms of Salmonella food poisoning for the next week. If you do get sick, see your doctor.
