Canadian Alert: Fresh Jalapeno Peppers from U.S.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has issued an alert warning consumers not to consume some fresh jalapeno peppers imported from the United States because they may be contaminated with Salmonella.

JalapenosThe affected fresh jalapeno peppers were sold unlabelled from bulk containers or in 4.5 kg “Cal Fresco” brand cases at these stores in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan between December 3 and December 20, 2011:

  • Extra Foods
  • Lucky Dollar
  • No Frills
  • Real Canadian Superstore
  • Real Canadian Wholesale Club
  • Shop Easy
  • SuperValu
  • Your Independent Grocer

The peppers were also sold unlabelled from bulk containers at these stores in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Northwest Territories, Ontario, Saskatchewan, and Yukon, between December 3 and December 20, 2011:

  • Safeway
  • Various independent grocery stores

There have not been any reported illnesses associated with consumption of these jalapeno peppers. The product is being voluntarily recalled.
