S&M USA Enterprise is recalling Zhang Zhou Brand Tremella because it may contain undeclared sulfites. If anyone who is allergic to or has severe sensitivities to sulfites consumes this product the may have a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction.

Routine sampling by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets Food Inspectors revealed the presence of sulfites in the product packages. Sulfites are not declared on the product label.

Tremella is a type of gelatinous mushroom used in Chinese medicine and as part of Ayurvedic remedies. It’s also known as “wood ear” and “witch’s butter.”

Some people with asthma can have severe reactions to just 10 milligrams of sulfites in food, including anaphylactic shock.
