Cardamom Pods Recalled in Canada for Possible Salmonella Contamination

Community Natural Foods in Canada is recalling cardamom pods from the marketplace because they may be contaminated with Salmonella bacteria. The product was sold in bulk at Community Natural Foods stores in Calgary, Alberta. No illnesses have been reported to the company to date in connection with this recalled product.

The recalled product is Cardamom pods in variable sizes. There is no brand name on the product and there is no UPC number. The product was sold in bulk from February 9, 2018 to March 7, 2018. This recall was triggered by a recall in the United States.

Food that is contaminated with Salmonella bacteria will not look, smell, or taste spoiled and the texture is not affected. Young children, pregnant women, the elderly, and anyone with a chronic health condition or a weakened immune system can become seriously ill if they contract this type of food poisoning.

The symptoms of a Salmonella infection can include fever, headache, nausea, abdominal pain and cramps, vomiting, and diarrhea that may be bloody. And the long term complications of this infection can be serious, including endocarditis, irritable bowel syndrome, reactive arthritis, and high blood pressure.

If you purchased this product, do not eat it, even if you plan to cook with it. Throw it away in a sealed or double wrapped or bagged package and put it in a secure garbage can so other people and animals can’t get to it. Or you can take it back to the store where you bought it for a full refund.
